A high resolution implementation of the WAVEWATCH III wave model has been introduced in order to improve the accuracy of wave forecasts in the region and to provide a publicly accessible source for high resolution wave information. WAVEWATCH III predicts only waves that are directly generated by the winds (not tsunamis or tidal waves!) and calculates the average of the highest 30% of waves, a parameter called the significant wave height. The current implementation hosts a 4 km spatial resolution around the Caribbean, with the model being fed with high resolution wind data from the Global Forecasting System model. The model is run twice per day for 00Z and 12Z and produces 168 hour forecasts.

Numerical Wave modelling attempts to mathematically describe the state of the sea and calculate how wave energy will evolve with different directions and frequencies.
What Is A Wind Wave And How Is It Formed?
As the name suggest wind waves are formed directly by the wind. As wind blows over the surface of the ocean, friction develops between wind and water. This causes a disturbance of the water molecules and they also start moving in the same direction the wind is blowing. The stronger the wind blows the greater the number of molecules that begin to move and interact with each other causing an increase in energy and a resultant increase in the height of the waves.
What Is The Difference Between A Wind Sea And A Swell?
Caribbean countries are to a large extent subjected to influences from the sea. The region’s beaches and marine habitats are constantly being sculpted by wave action. Furthermore, Industries such as fisheries, tourism, transportation as well as search and rescue operations are all affected by the state of sea. Owing to the location of the region, storm waves during the annual hurricane season also pose an enormous threat to life and property along the coast.
